Sedation Dentistry

It’s not at all unusual to feel some anxiety about going to the dentist. More than 75% of adults have some form of dental fear. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen a dentist due to apprehension about treatment, then don’t delay another moment! Creating Dental Excellence can ensure that your treatment remains anxiety-free with sedation dentistry. You’ll be able to relax in the presence of our friendly team, cozy surroundings, and comfortable treatment rooms.

Here’s what to expect from the most common forms of sedation dentistry used in our practice.

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as “laughing gas,” has been used in dental offices since the late 1800s. Nitrous oxide is a safe, effective, and affordable sedation option that dissipates quickly. It can significantly help people relax while reducing sensations of discomfort, and it can be safely used for both adults and pediatric patients. Nitrous oxide is most commonly used for minor dental procedures such as filling cavities. The effects of Nitrous oxide wear off quickly—patients can even drive themselves home after an appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation
If you panic at the thought of sitting in a dental chair, we can ease your concerns with oral conscious sedation dentistry. Oral conscious sedation is used when patients need multiple or complex procedures and for patients who have extreme anxiety or phobia related to dentist visits. We will prescribe you a sedative that you take an hour before your dental appointment. Most patients fall asleep but are still able to respond throughout their treatments. It is necessary for patients who use oral conscious sedation to have a driver take them home after their visit.

I.V. Conscious Sedation
Though its effects are similar to those of oral sedation, IV sedation is administered intravenously. It can be used for both shorter and longer appointments. IV sedation works more quickly than oral conscious sedation, and its effects can be adjusted by our Dentists throughout the procedure. For that reason, IV conscious sedation is often a good option for longer, more complex procedures.
If you avoid dental visits because of anxiety, please call us today to find out more about sedation dentistry.
